Current Needs For Columbia, SC (October 2016)

*Hosts For Holiday Drives
We are looking for churches or groups who would be interested in partnering with us to host a drive this holiday season. Whether you want to host your drive as part of Orphan Sunday or for Thanksgiving or Christmas, we would love to talk with you about needs in our foster care community! Please email Rachel at columbia.sc@theforgotteninitiative.org to get started.

*Paper Goods & After-school Snacks
A local children’s shelter is always in need of household items like paper towels, paper plates, plastic forks, and sensitive skin bar soap as well as after school snacks to have on hand for the kids (for example: individual bags of chips, apple sauce packets, granola bars, etc.). We are collecting these at any time for them to help them keep things running smoothly. If you would like to donate individually or arrange a drive for these products, contact us at columbia.sc@theforgotteninitiative.org.

*Worker Appreciation Teams
We are looking for churches or groups that would be willing to partner with us to do something special on a monthly basis to care for and encourage workers at the agencies we serve. Simple things like baked goods, goody bags, notes of encouragement, or a special breakfast will let workers know that they are remembered and appreciated as they do the important work of caring for children. We serve agencies of different sizes, so even if your group is not big, you can still be involved. If you are interested, please email columbia.sc@theforgotteninitiative.org so that we can discuss the possibilities and help get your group connected!

*Fast Food Gift Cards
We are collecting gift cards in small increments ($5 or $10) to fast food restaurants for social workers to keep in their cars. Often, when workers are transporting children, they need to stop and get them a meal. Many workers even use their own money for this purpose. Let’s bless and encourage our local social workers this holiday season with gift cards to use for these meals. If you would like to donate a gift card or two or if you want to collect some for us, please email columbia.sc@theforgotteninitiative.org.

*Teen Journey Bags
We can always use Journey Bags for any age, but several agencies have specifically requested bags filled for teens. If you are interested in packing a bag or two for a teen transitioning into foster care or if your church would like to host a Journey Bag drive, please email Rachel at columbia.sc@theforgotteninitiative.org for more information and a list of suggested items to include.

*Used Tablets for DSS
Do you have a tablet of any kind that you no longer use? Recently, we had a generous donor pass on their used Nook for a local DSS office. It will be used for older children and teens who have to wait in the office to watch TV or play games while they wait. DSS was thrilled to have it! We would like to try to provide them with a few more tablets so that workers can check them out as needed for travel, etc. Email columbia.sc@theforgotteninitiative.org if you can help!

*Belk Gift Cards
A local children’s shelter is in need of gift cards to Belk so that they can take their teen girls shopping for necessities. This is a great way to help a teenage girl in our foster care community get the items she needs but also be treated to a day of shopping where she feels special and valued. Can you pick up a gift card to help with this project? Email us at columbia.sc@theforgotteninitiative.org for information on where to send the gift cards!

Rachel Lawrence

TFI Advocate: Columbia, SC

Rachel is married to Jonathan and has three daughters through the gift of adoption. She wants to be more like Jesus and to live a life of gratitude for all He is and has done. Until recently, she didn’t have much exposure to or experience with the foster care community; but the more she learned about it, the more she realized that she wanted to be involved with something so near to the heart of Jesus. She is excited about what God is doing and will continue to do in the foster care community in her city and feels honored to get to be a part of it!
