Current Needs For Columbia, SC (March 2017)

*Volunteers for Childcare at Foster Parent Training Event
We are looking for volunteers to help with childcare for a foster parent training event being held on Saturday, April 1st, at a church in NE Columbia. We need at least 2 adults (ages 18+) per room but could also use some mature youth as helpers. If you can help from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM or can even help with half of the day (8:30 to 11:30 AM or 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM), please email Rachel at You will be sent additional details and will need to fill out a form to be cleared by DSS in order to volunteer. Please feel free to email if you have any questions. If you cannot volunteer that day, we are also in need of individually packaged snacks and bottled water/juice boxes for the children. Any donation would be a great help! Thank you for helping us love the foster care community in this way!!

*Dressers For Children’s Home
A children’s home in town is in need of dressers (new or used) to help the rooms feel more like home and to give the children a place to keep their belongings. If you have a dresser you would like to pass along or know someone who might, please contact as soon as possible. We are also in need of volunteers with trucks who are willing to help us transport dressers.

*Worker Appreciation Teams
We are looking for churches or groups that would be willing to partner with us to do something special on a regular basis to care for and encourage workers at the agencies we serve. Simple things like baked goods, goody bags, notes of encouragement, or a special breakfast will let workers know that they are remembered and appreciated as they do the important work of caring for children. We serve agencies of different sizes, so even if your group is not big, you can still be involved. If you are interested, please email so that we can discuss the possibilities and help get your group connected!

*Fast Food Gift Cards
Can you donate a gift card for $5 or $10 for social workers to have on hand to buy a meal for a child in foster care? Oftentimes, workers spend their own money to make sure a kid has something to eat. Providing them with gift cards in these small increments will not only be a blessing but will let them know that the church is behind them, appreciating and supporting the work they do! Please email if you would like to make a donation or if your group would be wiling to host a fast food gift card drive for us.

*Paper Goods & After-school Snacks
A local children’s shelter is always in need of household items like paper towels, paper plates, plastic forks, and sensitive skin bar soap as well as after school snacks to have on hand for the kids (for example: individual bags of chips, apple sauce packets, granola bars, etc.). We are collecting these at any time to help them keep things running smoothly. If you would like to donate individually or arrange a drive for these products, contact us at

TFI Advocate: Columbia, SC

Rachel is married to Jonathan and has three daughters through the gift of adoption. She wants to be more like Jesus and to live a life of gratitude for all He is and has done. Until recently, she didn’t have much exposure to or experience with the foster care community; but the more she learned about it, the more she realized that she wanted to be involved with something so near to the heart of Jesus. She is excited about what God is doing and will continue to do in the foster care community in her city and feels honored to get to be a part of it!
